What makes Exhale unique?
Who says coffee is healthy? And why is Exhale 'ridiculously healthy'?
The science on coffee
Coffee is one of the most popular beverages in the world and because of that it’s one of the most studied, with over 21,000 studies published on coffee or caffeine alone.
In the last 15-20 years, the scientific opinion on coffee has turned from it being a guilty pleasure with adverse health implications to being something which can support a healthy lifestyle with an array of different potential health benefits.
One study published in 2020 even concluded that ‘Coffee may be viewed as a healthy vegetable food and a main supplier of dietary phenolic phytochemicals’.
What does the research say?
In 2017, the British Medical Journal (BMJ) published an umbrella review on coffee covering 218 meta-analyses of both observational studies and randomised controlled trials. It showed that ‘coffee is good for almost everything, as long as you weren’t pregnant’.
Specifically, coffee was associated with a 17% lower risk of ‘all-cause mortality’, i.e. death from any cause, from drinking 3 cups a day. As well as reducing the risk of a host of different illnesses and diseases.
According to a related BMJ article, in 2017 ‘Scientists woke up to coffee’s benefits’.
What's causing these benefits?
Most studies point towards coffee’s benefits coming from either:
- The antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity of compounds in coffee, mainly it’s polyphenols.
- The polyphenols themselves,
acting on a cellular level via other mechanisms.
Chlorogenic acid (CGA) is the most abundant and the most researched polyphenol in coffee. Studies show it has antioxidant, hepatoprotective, cardioprotective, anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic and neuroprotective effects to name a few.
But not all coffee is created equal
All coffee contains some amount of polyphenols and CGAs, but the reality is it’s highly variable from cup to cup. A 2014 study tested 104 espressos bought in cafes across Scotland, Italy and Spain and showed a 31-fold difference between the highest and lowest concentrations of CGA in coffees.
Our unique process involved multiple rounds of testing at independent labs across the UK and Europe to craft a
coffee that retains more of coffee’s naturally healthy compounds and excludes the bad… that also tasted delicious, while ensuring the highest standards of sustainability were met throughout. It was no mean feat!
How does Exhale compare?
The study mentioned above tested 104 espressos and their CGA content ranged from 6mg to 188mg per cup. An espresso made with Exhale coffee contains 410mg! So over double even the best coffees in the study.
We also tested to verify the active antioxidant ‘power’ of Exhale coffee using the respected ABEL-RAC method. They found that just one brewed cup of Exhale coffee has the equivalent antioxidant capacity of 12 punnets (1.8kg) of blueberries, 55 oranges or 1.2kg of kale.
Two cups of Exhale coffee naturally provide 20% of your RDA of Niacin. Making it one of the richest sources in our diets behind meat.
It is also organic certified, and tested to confirm it’s free from pesticides, mycotoxins and moulds.
